Today’s high where I live is 108 degrees. Eek! That’s pretty normal for this part of California, and even though you never truly get used to the heat, you do learn to live with it. That, and air conditioners rock.
But making sure your makeup lasts all day does get tricky. Will you be indoors all day or running errands through the city? Does makeup have to last until dinner and is there time for touch-ups? These are must-ask questions for me considering a brief walk from the car into Target during 110 degree+ weather can make my skin get slick. I’m very oily, so even a teeny amount of sweat mixed with the natural sebum my skin produces turns my face into water world.
Keeping your makeup looking fresh all day in the summer months requires some prep work. Here are 6 products to help you do that:
Skindinavia The Makeup Primer Spray | Oil Control
This primer is a great starter for your makeup. It does not clog your pores, is hypoallergenic, and is formulated so even sensitive skin faces can wear it comfortably. It also feels like nothing on your skin and dries within seconds.
Mehron Skin Prep Pro
If you’re looking for something with an intense amount of oil control, Mehron Skin Prep Pro is a professional moisture barrier that helps keep your skin shine free for hours, even under more extreme conditions. Skin Prep Pro makes your skin feel a little tight after it dries, but that goes away after a few minutes. I wouldn’t recommend this for daily use because at how well it blocks oils from coming through (don’t want clogged pores), but I do like to apply this on extremely long days when I know I won’t be able touch-up my skin, or if I need my skin to look good at 3 even though I’ll be running errands all morning.
Pixi by Petra Makeup Fixing Mist
If you have dry, normal or even slightly oily skin, this is a great setting spray for summer months. Makeup Fixing Mist prolongs makeup wear, hydrates skin, and the rose water & green tea infused formula comforts & balances skin. It also refreshes your skin midday with a quick spritz or two. I love the scent and usually wear this during work days. As I said above, I have very oily skin, but this works for me during work days since I spend a majority of my time indoors not sweating.
Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray
If you have excessively oily skin, Urban Decay All Nighter is awesome for keeping shine at bay during the summer. I think it works better than their De-Slick spray, and it’s made by Skindinavia who is known for their amazing group of priming & setting sprays. While we are on the subject, Skindinavia The Makeup Finishing Spray | Bridal is also great for non-brides who want to stop shine for HOURS.
Makeup Setting Face Powder
I’ll keep this as one product because there are so many that work great. Just remember: all powders are not created equal. Some settle into lines, some are not finely milled and some are cakey. But here are a few good ones: It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores HD Anti-Aging Micro Powder gives your skin an airbrushed finish while absorbing shine, Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder mattifies skin and softens the appearance of fine lines and pores, Tarte Smooth Operator Clay Finishing Powder removes excess surface oil with Amazonian clay and never appears chalky, and Rimmel London Stay Matte Pressed Powder gives you a shine-free complexion.
Tatcha Aburatorigami Japanese Beauty Papers
When all else fails or you just don’t have time to prep, oil blotting sheets are your new best friend. My favorite blotting sheets come from Tatcha as they are larger than standard blotting papers and powder free. They do not strip your skin of moisture and will not disturb your makeup.
